Mentorship pair John Paul Peters and Lana Winterhalt took part in our Professional Mentorship Program in music production. Lana was able to join John Paul in his studio at Private Ear Recording to get hands on experience. From setting up and tearing down for a recording session to engineering, equipment knowledge and recording.
Lana Winterhalt is a indie-pop artist, songwriter, and producer from Treaty 1 (Winnipeg, Manitoba). Lana participated in Manitoba Music’s Canadian Songwriter Challenge in 2020 where she met Kim Temple, President of High Priestess Publishing, who signed Lana as a songwriter in November 2020. Lana began self-producing her projects in 2019 and quickly fell in love with the production and engineering of music, which led her to being accepted into Music Publisher’s Canada’s Women In The Studio 2021 program. Lana is interested in expanding her understanding of producing music from mentor JP Peters at Private Ear Recording.
John Paul Peters is a co-owner of Private Ear Recording, a Winnipeg recording institution since 1994. In 2020 he won the WCMAwards for Producer of the Year and Audio Engineering. JP is an experienced and talented music Producer who is skilled in Songwriting, Music Composition, Audio Engineering and Audio Mixing. He is a multi-instrumentalist specializing in guitar and violin. His Production style is well known for being highly collaborative and bringing out the best in his clients sound. Some of his clients include Propagandhi, Mise En Scene, Begonia, Royal Canoe, Matt Epp, Rayannah, Mobina Galore, Anthony Oks, Crooked Brothers, Hello Fiasco and many more.
The mentorship program gave me the opportunity to learn from one of Winnipeg’s best music producers which will radically change the way that I work! While connections like this may happen naturally for some, being in a structured mentorship program pushed me to continue growing and learning and helped me to overcome my imposter syndrome and lack of confidence in myself as a producer.
This mentorship has affirmed that the process is so much more than teaching or guiding. It’s more about co-learning in a changing industry, developing a deeper understanding of each other and supporting the goals of my mentee with a mix of old and new knowledge and experience.
