What is Intellectual Property?

Intellectual Property, what does it mean? It's not the physical property or the art you produce, it's quite a bit more complex than that!

Intellectual Property (IP) is a legal term that describes an area of law that includes a set of legal rights and protections (including copyright) that can be owned in certain types of creative works. It’s important for artists as it helps to protect creative works and ensures creators can benefit from their endeavours!

The information above was created by students from the Manitoba Legal Clinic for the Arts, it is not legal advice nor does it create a solicitor-client relationship. The Clinic provides information and services entirely for free. Why? To support artists doing what they do best– creating– which makes the world a better place for everyone! If you need legal assistance, please fill out an intake form at legalclinicforthearts.ca
